Amy Langenfeld is a highly experienced health care provider working with at-risk communities in the Twin Cities for nearly 20 years.  She is recognized widely as a leading expert on opioid use during pregnancy, specifically as it affects populations facing disparities in urban and rural settings.

Through her collaboration and system development,  Amy was chosen as a 2015 winner of the Minnesota Department of Health Commissioner’s Circle of Excellence for innovative care of pregnant opioid-addicted and dependent women.  She was also one of four national recipients of the 2018 American College of Nurse Midwives Immunization Champion Award for her work with patients and practice guidelines around the immunization of pregnant and postpartum women.

Amy’s clinical work has predominantly been with an inner-city population that sees sexual violence and drug use disorders at a much higher rate than the national average. She has worked daily with women and families who have experienced multi-generational sexual violence, human trafficking, and drug and alcohol dependence.  She has a clinic specialty of Opioid Use Disorders in Pregnancy and is a buprenorphine (Suboxone/Subutex/Sublocade) waivered provider.

Amy is one of the few Advanced Practice Nurses to ever be a featured Continuing Medical Education Lecturer for Minnesota physicians via the Minnesota Medical Association.  She spoke on “Opioid Addiction and Dependency in Pregnancy” as part of their Pain, Opioids, and Addiction Lecture Series.

As a content expert for the Minnesota Department of Human Services, she has traveled to Washington, DC, as part of a workgroup to identify and address gaps in providing care to opioid-dependent Native American women and their families with SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration).  Amy was the sole health care provider given this honor.

Amy was the content expert for both White Earth and Red Lake Tribal Nations in their development of withdrawal avoidance and opioid addiction service programs serving both pregnant and greater tribal members.  She currently works with Red Lake Nation’s shelter program providing direct clinical care.

She has also been featured in a documentary, press, webinars, and interviewed on radio regarding her work with pregnant opioid-dependent women.

She attended the University of Minnesota for both undergraduate (Nursing) and graduate (Midwifery) school.  Amy completed her education for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner certification through Maryville University in St Loius, Missouri.

She worked as an inpatient nurse at Hennepin County Medical Center prior to her clinical midwifery training with the Health East System in the Twin Cities and Mayo Clinic/Hospital in Rochester, MN.  She has been a Certified Nurse Midwife with the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis, Inc., Minnesota Community Care, and HealthPartners Riverway.  She is currently seeing patients at Mental Health Counseling Services, both in person and via telehealth for mental health and drug use disorders, as well as being the clinical consultant/supervisor for several doula organizations in the Twin Cities Metro area.

Commissioner’s Circle of Excellence Award

On December 4, 2015, Amy and some of her colleagues were honored with the Minnesota Department of Human Services Commissioner’s Circle of Excellence Award for their work around opioid addicted and dependent Native American women.  Of the 67 opioid addicted women who had come to see Amy in clinic, there were only 2 who were unable to take their newborn home from the hospital because of illicit opioid use
